Icelandic MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir and Rolling Stone financial author Matt Taibbi will both be speaking at the second annual Public Banking Conference, “PBA2013: Funding the New Economy,” taking place in San Rafael, California on June 2-4, 2013.
Jónsdóttir, a member of Althing (the Icelandic Parliament) since 2009, is well-known as an activist and spokesperson for organizations ranging from Wikileaks to the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative. In 2011, she had the distinct honor of having her Twitter account subpoenaed by the U.S. Department of Justice in connection with her support for Wikileaks. While in the U.S., she will also be attending actions in support of Bradley Manning.
Taibbi, who began his career as a political reporter for Real Time with Bill Maher, is now internationally recognized as a scathing critic of big banks and irresponsible capitalism. His Rolling Stone articles are among that magazine’s most well-received work. He has described Goldman Sachs as “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money”
