As all my teacher friends, and as my kids’ teachers, were preparing to start another school year last month, I again heard the well-intentioned phrase. The point is well taken. We don’t pay teachers nearly enough. But this time, my head filled with more foundational thoughts.
1. Why do we denigrate another type of work, essential work, in order to protest the denigration of the type of work we’re defending?
2. We must transform payment for labor.
3. We must transform teaching.
4. We must transform sanitation.
